History and Origin

The miraculous son of Zechariah and Elizabeth (Mary's cousin), John lived in the desert as an ascetic. He preached a baptism of repentance, recognized Jesus as the 'Lamb of God', and baptized Him in the Jordan River. He was beheaded by order of King Herod.

Symbolism and Iconography

He is depicted wearing camel skin, holding a cross-shaped staff and a baptismal shell. He is often accompanied by a small lamb.

Celebration and Devotion

His birth is celebrated on June 24 and his martyrdom (beheading) on August 29.
