The miraculous son of Zechariah and Elizabeth (Mary's cousin), John lived in the desert as an ascetic. He preached a baptism of repentance, recognized Jesus as the 'Lamb of God', and baptized Him in the Jordan River. He was beheaded by order of King Herod.
